How to Sizzle on Stage: Five Keys to Public Speaking From ‘Food Network Star’


Most of the TV shows that my tween twins Jacob and Sophie watch make me wish we were Amish. The dialogue ranges from silly to sarcastic, the characters vacillate between inane and insulting, and their redeeming social, moral, or educational value is, well, beyond redemption. Luckily there is one show that all four of our family members can agree is a good use of our screen time, Food Network Star, on the Food Network. The plot is simple: Fifteen hopeful cooks compete for their dream job, to host their own show on Food Network. Celebrity chef team leaders Alton Brown, Bobby Flay, and Giada De Laurentiis serve as their mentors, guiding them through the cutthroat (and sometimes cut-finger) competition.
